How to Use Naver Map in Korea

If you are visiting Korea, Naver Map is often more useful than relying on Google Maps alone. This guide explains how to search, save places, check public transit routes, and avoid common mistakes when using Naver Map in Korea.

Start with this setup

Install Naver Map before you arrive in Korea. Open it once on Wi-Fi, allow location access, and test one route from Incheon Airport, your hotel, or a major subway station.

Why Naver Map matters in Korea

In Korea, local map data, public transit routes, walking directions, business hours, restaurant listings, and place names are often stronger in Naver Map than in global map apps. Google Maps can still help with general orientation, but Naver Map is usually the practical app for buses, subway exits, local restaurants, and short walking routes.

How to search places

  • Try the English name first: Incheon Airport, Myeongdong, Seoul Station.
  • If nothing appears, paste the Korean name from your hotel booking, KakaoTalk message, or website.
  • For restaurants and cafes, search by category plus area: coffee Hongdae, samgyetang Myeongdong.
  • Check the pin carefully. Similar branch names are common in Korea.

Public transit flow

  1. Enter your destination and tap directions.
  2. Choose public transit for subway and bus combinations.
  3. Check the subway line color, transfer station, exit number, and final walking route.
  4. When using a bus, check the stop direction. The opposite-side stop may have the same name.

For tourists, subway exits are especially important. A route that says โ€œExit 4โ€ can save several minutes compared with leaving through the wrong exit and crossing large roads.

Taxi and walking tips

Naver Map is good for checking whether a destination is walkable, but for taxi calls many travelers will still use Kakao T. If the taxi driver asks for the destination, showing the Korean place name or address from Naver Map is often easier than pronouncing it.

For walking, remember that underground malls, station passages, and road crossings can change the real route. If you are near a major station, check the exit number before you start walking.

Save these before your trip

SaveWhy it helps
HotelUseful for taxis, late-night return routes, and delivery/address checks.
Airport routePlan whether airport rail, bus, or taxi is better.
Major stationsSeoul Station, Hongdae, Gangnam, Myeongdong, Busan Station, etc.
Restaurants/cafesBranch confusion is common, so save the exact place.

Common mistakes

  • Searching only in English when the place is listed mainly in Korean.
  • Following the wrong branch of a chain restaurant or clinic.
  • Ignoring subway exit numbers.
  • Assuming every route works late at night. Bus and subway schedules change after midnight.
  • Not having mobile data. Map apps are much harder to use with only public Wi-Fi.
